My Day 25: MY TRAVELS IN EUROPE SERIES #04 The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes
This is the sanctuary of the Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes. When you enter the Gates of the Sanctuary you will see first of all the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on the hill with two winding walkways that leads to the center and winds up at the main entrance of the upper basilica
In the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception high masses are celebrated especially on the 11th February, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, a full program of activities takes place here at the Sanctuary (Domain). The Upper Basilica known as the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception was the second church built in the Domain. The Gothic Styled basilica has its sanctuary built directly above the Grotto. The Lower Basilica is known as the Rosary Basilica. Just in front of the Rosary Basilica is the open space known as Rosary Square, where the famous statue of the Crowned Virgin, often known as the “Crowned Statue” is located.

The entrance to the Lower Basilica also known as the Rosary Basilica can be seen on the left side.
The entrance to the Upper Basilica of the Immaculate Conception church is shown in this photo. In 1862, Pope Pius IX authorized the Bishop Bertrand-Sévère Laurence to permit the veneration of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Lourdes.
The interior of the Lower Basilica known as the Rosary Basilica is impressive with a mosaic of the Immaculate Conception and the other mosaics depicting the fifteen Mysteries of the Rosary.
That’s me at the Sanctuary of the Lourdes Shrine, after I kindly requested a photographer to take my photo standing right in front of the Basilica; a tripod would have come in handy if I brought one.
The Immaculate Conception Basilica is situated on top of the rock above the Grotto of Massabielle and behind the Basilica of the Rosary.
