Travel to DisneyWorld in Orlando, Florida – Family Vacation
This trip to Orlando, Florida was actually unplanned, although my twin relatives wanted to spend their 7th birthday in Disneyworld. They wished to go see Disneyworld for their birthday and we found out that another relative is visiting the US on that same week so he was invited to join us at Disneyworld.
It took us only a short time to organize everything from transportation rental to the places we had to visit, thanks to the trip planners at the CAA Offices, they gave us maps and planned routes to take going to Orlando from Toronto via the scenic Fingerlakes in New York State.
On the way to Orlando, Florida we picked up our visiting young relative in the US and he told us that this was his first time to go see DisneyWorld. As for me and the twins, this was also our first time to see DisneyWorld. Although I have visited DisneyLand in Anaheim, California years ago. We didn’t make any hotel reservations because of such short trip notice so we took chances on accommodations on the way to Orlando. Even in Orlando, Florida we were just planning to walk in and get rooms available at the hotels around the area. It wasn’t a good time to go to Disneyworld because of the coming spring break but we decided to go anyway. The kids got their birthday wish come true and in a way I got my dream travel come true also.
We have family vacations once in a while and it is usually those unplanned vacations and a spur-of-the-moment decision like the one we had on our Hawaiian family vacation where we all decided we had enough of the winter weather and it was time to go and escape to warmer climate on the island of Oahu and Honolulu was the paradise chosen for that escapade. I have always planned to visit DisneyWorld and it is the right time and what makes it more meaningful is the mere fact that the whole vacation is going to be a family affair now. The twin kids were on March Break on their school schedule and their mother had booked two weeks vacation. I asked my boss for a two-week vacation without any notice but knowing how nice my boss was, he let me go for two weeks vacation with pay. He told me that they would get a temporary worker for two weeks to cover for me at the office. I got him a Donald Duck baseball cap as a surprise when I got back from Florida.
We left Toronto on Sunday at dawn to avoid any peak traffic in the highway since March Break vacations started on Monday, the next day. We crossed the U.S. Border and drove through the scenic Fingerlakes mountain views. It was a smooth drive all the way to Carlisle, Pennsylvania, where we stayed overnight at the Holiday Inn Hotel. We were lucky there was one room left, the family suite, otherwise there was no vacancy on the regular rooms. It looked more like a presidential suite with two bedrooms and a living room with a sofa bed and there were 3 TV sets and 2 bathrooms. Everyone had a good night’s sleep and in the morning we left the hotel after breakfast when we checked out, hoping for an early start. We passed by Chesapeake Bay, then on to the Carolinas (North & South) where our relative visiting the US from Asia was waiting for our arrival. If he had a visa to enter Canada, we would have invited him to stay with us for a few days, but he didn’t and his return flight to Manila was going to be from Buffalo International Airport. Our plan was to stay overnight in a hotel in Buffalo, New York across from the airport so that we can take him there for his flight back home.
We also planned to take everyone to see the awesome Niagara Falls on the New York State side where you can actually have a better view of the magnificent Canadian Niagara Falls in Niagara Falls, Ontario. On our way back to New York, there was a freak snowstorm in Albany which has grown from a small Dutch settlement into New York State’s Capital City. Since our visitor haven’t seen or touched snow before in his life we obliged him to go and experience it first-hand. I took off my winter coat and traded it with his satin bomber jacket because he wanted to lie down on the snow covered ground and create a “snow angel”, great idea but i did not want him to freeze in that cold weather. I told him to wear the pair of leather gloves that I always keep in my coat pockets and he did. All bundled up and ready to go outside on that snowy day, he jumped out of the van and rushed to the mounds of snow in the small park we went and we all waited inside the heated van in the parking lot. I should have gone and taken some photos of him playing in the snow but not without a winter coat. So we waited and when he got back to the van I got my waterproof coat back and dust off the snow. He was so happy to finally have his dream of seeing and touching real snow come true. Although winter was over, we still get snowstorms every now and then. This kind of sudden storm is a freak, some kind of deviation from nature. It makes driving dangerous so we waited out the storm and had a long two-hour lunch at a fast food restaurant, where we ordered burgers, fries, pizzas and soda drinks. By the time lunch was over, the storm was suddenly gone so we were back on the road again.
After two days of long driving to Florida from Toronto, we arrived Orlando sometime in the early afternoon. We tried to get an adjoining hotel rooms at the Disney Resort but there was no vacancy, then we went to the nearest Holiday Inn to DisneyWorld but still no vacancy. We tried other hotels nearby, they were fully-booked due to the schools and colleges Spring Break in the US. Our best choice was to rent a Town House in Kissimmee, a town not too far away, about 20 minutes drive to DisneyWorld. After we phoned their rental offices, they reserved a unit for us that had 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 bathrooms, a huge living room with sofa bed and a fully furnished walk-in kitchen where we could cook and eat instead of going out to eat all the time if we stayed in a hotel. We did celebrate the kid’s birthday party at Red Lobster Restaurant and they got their birthday wish to see DisneyWorld. It was the best deal we could get on such short notice although it was a bit pricey than the adjoining 2 hotel rooms. The rental unit was on the ground floor of the two storey building with over 10 units. After checking in at the rental offices, we got the keys to the unit and we got a good deal for the one-week rental that came with a discounted price. We picked up some groceries on the way to Kissimee to stay there on our trip. It was a good deal and the place could accommodate all of us seven family members plus our visitor and another sister who works at Philippine Air Lines was flying in from San Francisco to join us in Orlando, after we went to meet her at the airport. We prepared dinner at the rented place instead of eating out and we took turns cleaning the dishes using the dishwasher and drying the dishes off. When we were done, we all prepared to unpack our things and get ready for the next day. The unit also came with a washer and dryer neatly kept in a small closet at the bedroom corridor and this unit is just like a home away from hone.
Enjoying an Adventure Boat Ride in DisneyWorld
Then all of us were off to bed early because we were planning on an early visit to the recreational park and stay there all day. The next day was a riot in the kitchen eating breakfast after we fried some eggs, cooked bacon and sausages and some fried rice and toasted some bread. Everyone had a big breakfast but after breakfast, there was chaos again and this time, it was who goes first to bathe and get ready. In order to solve our big dilemma, we all agreed to only take 20 minutes each to take a bath and get ready, if one is not done drying their hair our sister, the hair stylist would help us. And we were all done in less than two hours, thanks to the two full bathrooms and a half, one with bathtub and the other one only had a shower stall. When everyone was ready, we piled into the minivan and drove all the way to DisneyWorld in Orlando, about 20 minutes away. After we parked at the Disney Parking lot, we bought the admission passes to the park. The family admission passes saved us a bundle and everyone was happy and ready to go inside the park and enjoy the magical kingdom of Disney.
